With a unique blend of electronic and rock music, as well as a fusion of both male and female lead vocals, Shiny Toy Guns is in its own league. The band's sound, influenced by Jesus Jones, Pink Floyd and Madonna, sends waves through the alternative music scene.
After the release of its first album, "We Are Pilots," the band began touring with lead vocalists Carah Faye Charnow and Chad Petree, bassist/keyboardist Jeremy Dawson and drummer Mikey Martin. While hitting over 17 countries over a span of a year, the band began to write their sophomore album.
Their second album, "Season of Poison," unfolded during the tour. Little did fans know that the electronic/rock sound they heard on "We Are Pilots" was going to change. Because "Season of Poison" had guitar riffs and a darker sound, there were many negative reactions to the change.
"(The criticism) does affect us dynamically, but it doesn't have merit. Some people are going to see it, and get it. If Chad and I thought it was a bad album, we wouldn't have released it," Dawson said.
The emotions and feelings on tour really brought out an "aggressive approach to the record," Dawson added, regarding the more intense sound to the record. "The sound happened naturally. Being on tour winds you up like a clock and screws you up inside. Dark and troublesome times happened, stuff to light off fireworks."
Charnow left the group in December, after the "We Are Pilots" tour, and Shiny Toy Guns picked up Sisely Treasure. Dawson described her as "a transforming artist (who) plays five different instruments and is an amazing dancer."
The band is loaded on talent - and points of view. "We are diverse in taste and reflect our diversity in our songwriting," Dawson said.
Shiny Toy Guns is making a name for itself and has only just begun an amazing musical career.
Shiny Toy Guns at Pipeline
Shiny Toy Guns showed exceptional style during a live performance at Pipeline last Friday.
The band opened with "Starts With One," a song from their first album, "We Are Pilots." Amazing lighting complemented their energy and voice on stage.
Sisely Treasure, who has provided female vocals since Carah Faye Charnow left the group, proved her talents throughout the show as she went from keyboards to vocals and then to bass.
