A carbon footprint refers to the measure of human activities on the environment in relation to climate change. Here are some ways that students can minimize their carbon footprint and become energy efficient:
1. Unplug appliances. Appliances use "phantom energy," even if they're turned off. In fact, according to the Department of Energy, 75 percent of electricity is lost when appliances are plugged in.
2. Buy a laptop. Laptops generate less energy than desktop computers.
3. Put your computer to sleep.Don't use screensavers. Turn off the computer monitor or place the computer on sleep mode instead.
4. Air dry dishes.Use a dish rack and let the air do the work.
5. Line dry clothes. Put clothes on hangers and bust out the clothes pins instead of using a dryer.
6. Drive safely. Aggressive driving, like speeding and rapid breaking, can waste gasoline.
7. Carpool or take public transportation. Get buddies together and create a carpool system or take the bus.
8. Plant a tree. Reduce amounts of carbon dioxide in the air while helping to create cleaner, fresher air.
9. Change your light bulbs. Change your light bulbs to either CFLs or LEDs to conserve energy.
10. Recycle plastic, aluminum, glass, and paper. Reduce the amount of waste on our lands by using the old to create the new.
