According to the World Association for Sexual Health, 2 percent of men and 1.4 percent of women enjoyed bondage play in the past year.

As I struggled to keep the handcuffs from digging into my skin, my girlfriend wrapped her tongue around my manhood. Bound to the bed frame, I could only moan with pleasure while she teased me by toying with the timing of my orgasm. Finally, unable to control myself any longer, I climaxed in an undulating wave of ecstasy. Who knew that being powerless could bring so much bliss?

Before experimenting with bondage, my girlfriend (now my ex) and I had fallen into a sexual lull. Foreplay had become foreworn and our lovemaking had slumped into lifelessness. What we needed was a quick pick-me-up that would allow us to rekindle our passion.

Instead of belaboring the psychology of our sex life in couples therapy, we decided to look for a simple, inexpensive solution to our erotic pickle. To our surprise, a pair of furry handcuffs and a blindfold did the trick. And, apparently, we weren't alone in our kinky endeavors. According to recent surveys conducted by sexual health professionals, over 30 percent of couples in the United States have engaged in bondage play during the course of their relationships.

As my ex-girlfriend and I discovered, a few common bondage implements can satisfy an entire range of forbidden fantasies. At the same time, they can salvage a relationship's shriveling intimacy. So if your relationship is in need of some sexual healing, or you're just looking to add some spice to your sugary bedroom behavior, consider the following alternatives, all of which come highly recommended.

Sensual Submission: Everyone likes to feel like they're in control, but every once in a while it's nice to let someone else take the wheel. If you're feeling overworked in the classroom, relieve your tension in the bedroom by slipping your wrists into a pair of handcuffs and letting your lover take charge. Be prepared to squirm, though, since your partner will probably tease much more than they will please.

Teaching the slave: If you've already mastered the basics of dominating your significant other, take their training to the next level. Turn down the lights, set a burning candle in the corner, and lead your slave into the bedroom. After commanding your partner to kneel on the floor, tie their arms to either side of the bed, making sure that their naked rear is fully exposed. After telling your slave that they've been bad and need to be punished, rub their bottom softly before giving them the spanking that they deserve.

Food for sex: America's obesity rate continues to escalate, so why not take advantage of the crisis? Tie a blindfold around your partner's brow. If you don't have a blindfold handy, try using an everyday household item, such as a handkerchief or a necktie.

Next, whip up a bowl of succulents and place them under your partner's nose. One by one, insert each item into their mouth, having them guess the name of each tasty treat. If they guess right, reward them with an erotic massage down below. If not, break out a rice paddle and remind them of who's in control.
