As he did in Hawai`i’s season opening game, Roderick Flemings stepped up big for the Rainbow Warriors in the clutch as he helped guide the team to a 73-65 victory over the McNeese State Cowboys Sunday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

“We found a way to pull it off in the end. We played a little soft defense in the second half, so they came back and got a little bit of momentum going,” Flemings said. “We feel like we should have beat them by more but that’s how it goes some times.”

Junior guard Dwain Williams came out of the gates firing for the Rainbow Warriors in the first half with 16 of his 20 points in the opening half, connecting on four of  his eight three-point attempts which helped give Hawaii a 37-30 lead going into the break.

UH came out of halftime on a roll and extended their lead to 12 points after the first five minutes of the second half, led by senior forward Petras Balocka, who had eight of his ten points in the span. The Cowboys came roaring back, however, pulling within one point with just over two minutes to go in the game.

Just as looked as if McNeese State could take the lead for the first time in the game Flemings put the team on his back as he did in the first game and came up with crucial back to back baskets. He scored 12 second half points to go along with his 14 total for the game to give the ‘Bows a cushion to clinch the win.

“We called it (going to Flemings late), we went to our plays and it was to get it inside and we had another option but we didn’t get to that second option. (Junior guard) Hiram (Thompson) did a good job of feeding the post and getting the ball into him,” head coach Bob Nash.

The `Bows the wrap up the Rainbow Classic against Northern Colorado tonight at 11 p.m. on national television as part of ESPN’s second annual College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.

“It's real important; we want to close it out. We don’t want to just go 2-0 and lose in the championship. We feel like they are one of the best teams in the tournament so we want to come out and show them what we got and come out on top with a (win),” Williams said.
