Dear Editor,
Students can’t get the classes they need to graduate. Student services are being reduced. Faculty and staff are being asked to take large pay cuts. Yet, the UH’s top administrators continue to live off the fat of the land.
Not only does the president of UH make more than President Barack Obama’s $400,000 a year, so do the director of the Cancer Research Institute, the dean of the medical school and the dean of the law school. Fourteen other administrators make over a quarter-of-a-million dollars a year and 14 more make over $200,000 per annum.
This university is drowning in chancellors and vice chancellors and directors. In fact, since 1994, UH and UHM administrators have increased by 277 percent, or from 62 to 234, while students and faculty have been stable. These folks have hijacked this university for their own enrichment. It is time to make large cuts in the numbers of administrators, cut their salaries by one-third to one-half and cap all salaries in the $250,000 range (or five times the annual household income in Hawai‘i).
