    Winning the “Race to the Top” (RTTT) grant on Aug. 25 has sparked some concern amongst Hawai‘i’s teachers and education professionals. The federal money, totaling $75 million, is meant to focus on creating a performance-based contract system for public school teachers and principals, turn around failing schools, implement national standards for Hawai‘i’s students, improve data collection to keep track of student progress grades K-12, and reorganize the Department of Education (DOE) to make it more efficient.

  • 2010-08-30 Fungia Scientists construct first frozen repository for Hawaiian corals

    The Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and scientists from the Smithsonian Institute have teamed up to make history. Scientists and interns constructed the first frozen repository for Hawaiian corals, which will aid in preventing the extinction of various species of coral.

    Patricia Cooper, the current associate dean for academic affairs at UH Mānoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), will now be serving as interim dean of the graduate division for the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research and Graduate Education.

  • 2010-08-25 Out of State Tuition Proposed increase in out-of-state enrollment aims to ease budget crunch

    University of Hawaiʻi administrators are planning on going before the Board of Regent’s (BOR) to recommend increasing the nonresident enrollment cap. UH administrators would like to help the current budget shortfalls by taking in more revenue through non-resident applicants who pay larger tuition fees.
