The University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine basketball team stymied a late comeback by the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks for a 67-51 victory on Sunday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center. The 'Bows improved to 2-1 in the closing game of the Waikīkī Beach Marriott Classic.
UH had a big night on the boards, led by the current Western Athletic Conference player of the week, forward Tanya Smith. Smith had 11 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. The Rainbow Wahine out-rebounded the Lumberjacks 48-32.
"Our goal is to get 50 (rebounds) a game," said UH head coach Jim Bolla. "The other night we just did a poor job on a team that only averaged 30 (UC Davis). They (almost) out-rebounded us and controlled the game."
The Rainbow Wahine battled closely with the Lumberjacks in the first couple of minutes and tied the game at 11-11 off a layup by senior center Iwona Zagrobelna. The Rainbow Wahine then went on a 19-7 scoring run capped by a Zagrobelna layup off a pass in the lane by freshman Keisha Kanekoa with five minutes left in the half.
"Keisha did a spectacular job tonight," Bolla said. "It was really an overall team effort, and the bench really made a difference in getting the offense going."
Kanekoa helped lead the way for the Wahine offense, recording 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals. UH's bench outscored Northern Arizona's 24-16.
The Lumberjacks managed to fight back in the second half and pulled within four points of the 'Bows at 53-49. However, Hawai‘i shot back with 10 unanswered points to grab a 63-49 advantage after sophomore Megan Tinnin nailed a free throw with 37 ticks left in the game. Tinnin grabbed eight rebounds and was the third player in double-digits scoring.
"We realize if we don't get boards, we're not going to win games," Tinnin said. "But we did that tonight, and it showed."
Hawai‘i showed its best performance at the free throw line, downing 15 of 18 shots. Smith led both teams with four blocks and was the lone UH representative on the all-tournament team.
The Rainbow Wahine will next face the Lipscomb Lady Bisons (1-3) on Thanksgiving Day in the Jack In The Box Rainbow Wahine Classic.
"If we keep this energy up and stay strong on the boards, we're going to be a tough team to beat," Bolla said.
