Third Annual Surf and Roots Fest

Dec. 8, noon to 6 p.m.
Kualoa Ranch
Sandwiched between the lush, emerald mountains on one side and the cool, sparkling aquamarine ocean on the other, Kualoa Ranch on O‘ahu's windward coast is the perfect venue for the third annual Surf and Roots Fest this Saturday.
Music, surfing, food and booze all will be packed into one day of sun and fun for all ages at the festival, which will be headlined by Grammy award-winning artist Ziggy Marley.
Marley looks forward to his first show in Hawai‘i in four years.
"I love Hawai‘i. ... Hawai‘i is on the reggae vibration; the scene there is magnificent," he said during a phone interview last Friday.
The Surf and Roots Fest will be happening from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
It is the only event like this that will be held at Kualoa Ranch in 2007 - only one concert per year is permitted on the grounds.
Throughout the day, listen to one of many reggae and dancehall artists on two stages. The main-stage lineup includes a number of local artists: Natural Vibes, Ooklah the Moc, Go Jimmy Go, O-shen and Irie Souls, among others.
The second stage will feature Pacific Sounds Outernational, 45Revolver and others spinning dancehall and hip-hop.
Marley is scheduled to play on the main stage at 4 p.m. Don't call it a performance though. The spontaneity of going on stage and letting whatever happens happen makes Marley an artist, not a performer.
"I don't see myself as a performer. Performances are more planned," Marley explained. "What I do is expressin'. You express yourself uniquely every day."
Besides music, the all-ages festival will also feature a surf village, with tents set up for food, clothing and crafts. Various surf brands of clothing will be available at different booths, and some pro surfers - like O‘ahu's own Kekoa Cazimero - will be hanging out for meet-and-greets, according to Jonathan Mack from the 3 Sexy Guys production company.
