To celebrate the accomplishments of the University of Hawai‘i's Western Athletic Conference champions, UH, in conjunction with state officials and city and county officials, will host Celebration of Champions Week events Jan. 16 to 22 to honor the members of UH's football, women's volleyball and women's soccer squads.

Four events have been scheduled to commemorate the championship seasons of these Hawai‘i teams and to honor the student-athletes and coaches for their accomplishments. The events include:

House and Senate honor teams, Jan. 16
The UH football, women's volleyball and women's soccer teams will be honored in the Senate chambers on the opening day of the 2008 Legislature at the State Capitol on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. Following that ceremony, there will be a joint Senate-House celebration in the rotunda at noon.

The festivities in the rotunda will include comments by Senate President Colleen Hanabusa and House Speaker Calvin Say, as well as UH President David McClain and UH Mānoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw. The UH band and Rainbow Dancers will provide music and entertainment. The public is invited.
"WAC Champions on Display," Jan. 19

A "WAC Champions on Display" presentation will be held in conjunction with the UH men's basketball team's game against Fresno State on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 7:05 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center. Members of the football, women's volleyball and women's soccer teams will be introduced at halftime, and they will be presented their conference championship trophies by WAC Commissioner Karl Benson.

Each fan in attendance will receive a free poster commemorating the 2007 football season. The poster, which includes a team photo and the autographs of players and coaches, will be distributed at a table near Gate A prior to the basketball game (one poster per person).

"Parade of Champions," Jan. 20
Mayor Mufi Hannemann and the City and County of Honolulu are hosting a "Parade of Champions" on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m. in Waikīkī to honor the UH football, women's volleyball and women's soccer teams, as well as local high school and intermediate football champions. The parade will start at Fort DeRussy (Saratoga Road and Kalākaua Avenue) and end at the "Sunset on the Beach" site (Kapahulu and Kalākaua avenues), where there will be food, music and entertainment.

Governor's address, Jan. 22
Governor Linda Lingle will recognize UH coaches and players from UH's WAC championship teams during her State address on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m. at the State Capitol. UH representatives in attendance will join her for lunch at Washington Place following her address.
