In their last match, the Warriors dropped a pair of MPSF matches to Long Beach State at home, Jan. 10-11. The Tritons (2-3, 1-3 MPSF) step into the SSC after coming off a road split, losing in straight sets to UCLA while winning in four at UC Irvine.
On Jan. 11, the Warriors dropped a four-set decision to then-No. 6 Long Beach State 49ers, while also dropping them one spot down in the rankings. A crowd of 2,679 watched as UH took a 15-11 lead midway in the first set, hitting .545. Despite a later comeback by Long Beach, the Warriors were able to hold on to take in the first and only set of the night. LBSU converted on UH errors, as Hawai‘i only managed .171 hitting percentage in the second set. In the third and fourth set, UH was able to pull even and take the lead, but it was the 49ers that came out in the end.
Hawai‘i has dominated the series with UC San Diego since the series began in 1980 with the Warriors leading the all-time series, 37-0. In matches played in Honolulu, UH owns a 16-0 mark, while also recording 18-0 mark in San Diego and 3-0 at neutral sites. UH has won 103 of the 112 games in the 37 matches and have gone to five sets only twice against the Tritons. Since going to rally scoring in 2001, Hawai‘i has swept the UC San Diego 11 of the last 13 matches, going four games only twice.
Following the Warrior and Triton match-up, Hawai‘i heads to the mainland where they will face UC Santa Barbara, Feb. 1-2. First serve is 7 p.m. PST both nights.
