Getting a degree in four is financially ideal. So why do many students at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa take longer to graduate? Ka Leo asked students to share how the UH Mānoa system is working - or not working - for them. Look out for future articles on counseling, getting classes, and how graduate on time at UH Mānoa.

No. I have always gotten my classes. I always did it on time.

Right now I have 16; last semester I took 17.

Have you gone to academic counseling? What did you think of it?

It helped me to settle what kind of classes I'm going to take, and it helped me get started with my directed studies ...which is a major part of our department.

Name: Terrence Mateo

Major: Japanese and Political Science

Class Standing: Senior

Expected Graduation Date: Spring 2013

Have you had any problems registering for classes?

Not really. I have been lucky...when the classes that I need are filled up, there's usually another class I can take that satisfies another requirement. I haven't had a lot of problems that way.

How many credits have you taken per semester?

The second semester of my freshman year I took 18 credits, but I've generally taken 15 credits each semester.

Have you gone to academic counseling? What did you think of it?

Japanese majors are required to consult with someone within the department about our classes. I've also gone to the QLC [College of Arts and Sciences advising] for ... academic counseling. My advisor has always been really helpful. She just has to approve and OK [that I am] taking the right courses. The QLC people ... because I am a double major, I went to them a lot to ask them how things work. I learned you cannot double dip for majors and minors. ... A lot of my friends are maybe taking 4 classes or 2 classes a semester, so they're a little bit behind. [The CAS advisers] always encouraged me not to do the minimum. Generally, they have been very supportive.

About 12, every semester.

Have you gone to academic counseling? What did you think of it?

Yes, [CAS], when I couldn't take the class I wanted to take.

Have you had any problems registering for classes?

No, it's been easy. The only thing I didn't like is I forgot to pay on time over break and I got dropped from everything so I had to re [register]. ... But that was pretty much my fault. I got re-accepted into all of them.

How many credits have you taken per semester?

Last semester, my first one [at UH Mānoa], I took 12 and this one 18.

Have you gone to academic counseling? What did you think of it?

Yes. [CAS counseling performed] beyond expectations. I have gone to a few different colleges, and the counselors there ... sometimes they don't know how to direct and they don't involve themselves, but this time he was doing a good job. He emailed me with things he thought about later and looked up for me, so it was really good.

Have you gone to academic counseling? What did you think of it?

Have you gone to academic counseling? What did you think of it?

No. I know what classes I have to take, and I should probably do that at some point. When I came for a college visit I got some advising on which classes I needed to take, but since I've been here I haven't seen a counselor. ... But the friends I've made, they've told me what to take. There's a lot of credits that you have to take for gen ed, like foreign language, Hawaiian studies or humanities.
